Day 47

Our Christmas Concert is coming up on December 15, 2016, at Bur Oak Secondary High School.  Please help your child to prepare for the concert by reviewing this song with them on a regular basis.  At the night of the performance, students are asked to wear a white shirt, blue jeans and sunglasses.

Christmas Shopping Blues
Performed by Mrs. Maybury’s Grade 2s

Christmas shopping just can’t wait.
I swear next year, I won’t leave it this late.
It’s now December twenty-four,
So grab my list head out the door.
Hit the mall without delay.
Christmas shopping blues.

I drive around for half an hour,
Can’t find find a place to park my car.
The lot is full there is no space.
I cannot find a parking place.
I’ll grow old before I park.
Christmas Shopping blues.

Boys
Do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do-waaaa
Girls
Do ba, do ba, do ba, do ba, do-baaaa
Everyone
do, do, do, ba,
Do-ba, do-ba, do-waaaa

Spent all my money, my credit card is maxed.
Spent all my money, my credit card is maxed.
Work all year to pay the bills.
Christmas shopping blues.
Work all year to pay the bills.
Christmas shopping blues.

Day 37 - Halloween

We all survived!  The kids were all way too excited about Halloween, so I put our math test off to later on in the week.  If you are going out trick-or-treating, please be safe.

Friday 21 October 2016

Day 32

Our class will be performing at next week's Gator Gathering!  The Gator Gathering will take place on Thursday, October 27, 2016 at 2 p.m.  You are welcome to come and watch.  Please help your child prepare for the performance by helping them to learn our song.

Days 25-31

Picture day was this week and the students looked wonderful!

We have been busy working on our skip counting.  By now, your child should be able to skip count by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 25s up to 200 and backwards from 50.  We will have a test next week.

Students have also started to learn about Diwali.  Below, please find the video that we watched in class.

(Hmm....in my draft post, I can see the video but on the live blog, it seems to disappear.  If you cannot not see the video, click here.)

If you have pictures of your family celebrating Diwali and are willing to have them displayed in our front hall cabinet, could you please send them in?  They will be returned to you the first week in November.

Please be advised that we have several cases of lice in our school.  Remind your child not to share hats, combs and brushes with their friends.  We are also reminding students with long hair to wear it pulled back.

Happy Friday!

Day 25

Today students are going home their Science Notebooks and special Spelling list.  Mrs. Pegg will be giving students a quiz next week Tuesday.

Tuesday 11 October 2016

Days 18-24

It sounds like you all had an amazing Thanksgiving weekend!  I hope that everyone took time out to relax and spend time with the family.  On this Thankful Tuesday, most of the kids expressed how thankful they are for their families.

On Friday I sent home students' "Thanks for Thanksgiving" book, along with a rubric for the work that they completed.  If you have not already done so, please review the rubric with your child, sign and return it to school.  Please note that only the pink rubric needs to be returned to school.

Don't forget to pack your child's agenda every day.

This afternoon, we attempted to login to the chrome books for the first time this year.  Unfortunately, it was more difficult than I had hoped.  Since our failed attempt, I spoke to our on site computer technician and he believes that he has figured out what the problem was.  We will give it another go tomorrow.

A huge thank you to all of the families who raised money for the Dance-a-Thon.   To date, 90% of the students have come in with a donation and we are currently in first place.  Yay, us!  The dance-a-thon will take place on Friday, October 14, 2016.

Day 17

We had an amazing day at the fair!  Thank you to the auntie and moms that braved the weather and came out to help.

See you this evening at G.P.S's Meet the Teacher Night!

Tuesday 27 September 2016

Days15 and 16

Well it was another Thankful Tuesday and this week your kids are thankful for...

1. Fashion;
2. Our upcoming trip to the Markham Fair;
3. That it's almost Halloween;
4.  Classmates; and
5. Shelter to live in.

With the exception of two students, who are still working on their tests, all math tests have been marked and sent home. I will briefly discuss the test tomorrow evening.

It looks like we will have a rainy day at the fair tomorrow.  Please make sure that your child is dressed for the weather and that they walk with a packed lunch.

Tomorrow night will be "Meet the Teacher".  I am looking forward to meeting you!

Friday 23 September 2016

Days 13 and 14

The students have been working hard to get our room and hallway ready for Meet the Teacher Night on Thursday.  Today we completed our Adjective Art and it looks AMAZING!

We have also been working on our graphs.  Just a reminder that our test will be on Tuesday.  If your child is able to complete the worksheets that I sent home earlier this week, they will have no problem writing the test.  I will try my best to send home tests by Wednesday.  Please sign and return them to school the following day.

Students are usually given approximately one hour to write in their Family Journal.  Since we were trying to complete our Adjective Art, I was only able to give the class approximately 40 minutes to write in their journals.

Thinking about joining Greensborough's Parent Council?  Take a look at this...

Benefits for children

• Children behave better and achieve more when their parents are involved in their education.

• Their parents will receive advice and information about how to support their learning.

Their concerns can be resolved more quickly when their parents have a positive relationship with school staff.

Benefits for parents

• Parents have a forum in which they can come together, share ideas and put forward their views to the headteacher and governing body of their school.
• Their active involvement in decision-making is increased, fostering a culture of ownership and participation.

• They get the support and advice they need to help and encourage their children with their learning.
• They have more information about their children's education and the quality of that education.

• They can build their own confidence, skills and social networks, leading to personal development and increased employability.

Council meets every third Thursday of the month in our school library.  The next meeting will take place on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at 7 p.m.

Monday is a P.A day, so no school for the kids.

Have a great weekend!

Tuesday 20 September 2016

Days 10 and 11

It's another busy week ahead of us!    We are reviewing graphs for the math test coming up next week.  Yesterday, I sent home a letter with review worksheets attached.  Your child should be able to complete these worksheets independently.  If they are having trouble, please let me know.

We are also working on our mural for the Markham Fair.  Our mural focuses on the love of reading.  I hope that you are able to visit the fair with your family.

Please be sure to go look at your child's agenda everyday.  Some students are walking around with papers that were handed out two weeks ago.  Remember, they are still young and will not always remember to tell you that there is something in their agenda that you need to look at.

It is Thankful Tuesday!  This week your kids are thankful for...

1. My mom and dad for "borning"my baby brother;

2. My grandma and aunt;

3.  My classmates;

4.  Pets;

5. Money; and

6. Everything around me.

😀

Saturday 17 September 2016

Days 7-9

We have had a busy week!  Students learned the importance of choosing the "right fit book".

It was wonderful to watch kids the following day taking care in picking the right book for their reading level.

In Language, students are also learning about adjectives.

After reading this story, students had to think of 14 adjectives to describe themselves.  To help your child, select a few objects in your home and ask them to use adjectives to describe them.  I have also been reading with students  and hope to send home their reading bags next week.

Students are continuing to work on their data management skills, in Math.  This week they worked on Bar and Line Plot graphs.

Students will have a Graphing test on Tuesday, September 27, 2016.  I will be sending home study sheets sometime next week.

In Mrs. Pegg's Science class, the students are learning about liquids and solids.  Can your child explain to you the difference between a liquid and a solid?

In Mr. Burrell's Music class, they are learning two new songs.

This week, many of the students were able to finish their Picasso inspired self portraits.  We can't wait for you to see them on "Meet the Teacher Night" (Thursday, September 29, 2016)!

Just as a reminder, we are asking that all parents stay out of our hallways.  If you need to drop something off or your child has left something on their hook, please go to the office.

If you have not signed up for remind.com, please do so, as soon as possible.  See link in our blog's tabs over on the left hand side.  When signing up, please use your child's name so that I know which family I am communicating with.  Thank you!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Tuesday 13 September 2016

Day 6

Today students wrote their first spelling test.  I was very impressed!  Spelling tests do not need to be signed or returned to school.  I forgot to return their spelling homework books and hope to do so tomorrow.

All of the students have presented their "Me Bags" and the oral rubric has been sent home.  Please sign and return it to school.

We are going to the Markham Fair!  Please sign and return the permission form as soon as possible.

Every Tuesday, is Thankful Tuesday in room 124.  Here is a short list of some of the things your kids were thankful for...

1. school;
2. friends; and
3. my parents for having me so that I could make them smarter :-).

Never a dull moment.

Monday 12 September 2016

Days 4 and 5

Writing, writing and more writing!  Friday afternoon, students went home with their Family Journals. The family journal is where students write to their family about the adventures they had in school that week.  There is a spot in the family journal for a family member to respond to the letter.  Please take the time to write back a short reply.  As a class, we brainstorm ideas but the writing is completely done independently.  Family journals are not marked.

Today we continued to work on our reading stamina.  We read "Reading Makes You Feel Good", by Todd Par (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-LOIpOB6kR4).  Students also wrote in their Weekend Journal about how they spent their weekend.

Tomorrow spelling homework is due and students will have their first spelling test.

Thursday 8 September 2016

Day 3

Library book exchange has been put on hold until next week.  Students can enjoy their books over the weekend.

Today in Language we discussed ways we can bring our writing up to a level 4.

After this activity, students were given their "First Day Jitters" piece they worked on yesterday and were asked to make their writing a level 4.  When you come in for Meet the Teacher Night on THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2016, you can read what your child wrote.

In Math, we started to work on our "Letters In Our Name" graph.

We had our first Health lesson today and we are learning about healthy eating.  Did you know that Greensbough is a "Healthy Living School"?  That means we believe in creating an environment that supports healthy eating habits and daily physical activity.  Over the last couple of days, I have notice students coming to school with sugary snacks and lunches.  Please be sure to pack a healthy snack and lunch for your child every day.

I have had a couple of questions about the spelling homework.  Students will have from Tuesday to Monday to learn their spelling words and to complete 3 spelling assignments.

The first homework assignment required students to put their spelling words in alphabetical order.  The second assignment required them to come up with rhyming words for their spelling words and the last assignment required students to create sentences using their spelling words.

Spelling tests are every Tuesday.

I still have a few students who have not brought in their signed book of forms or signed up for remind.com.  Please do so as soon as possible.

Overall, it was a wonderful Wednesday!

Wednesday 7 September 2016

Day 2

Wow!  It was a HOT day.  Despite having most of the lights off and 3 fans circulating the air, by the end of the day, the kids looked as if they were melting.  Please remember to dress your child for the weather and send a water bottle to school every day.

In Language we worked on "Read to Self".  We talked about the 3 ways to read a book and discussed the correct way to read silently.

In Math, we reviewed the graph we created yesterday and discussed what information can be learned from it.

In Visual Arts we started to discuss the artist, Pablo Picasso.  Over the next week or so, we will start working on our "Picasso Faces".

Students were sent home with their Spelling Homework notebook.  This notebook contains their spelling words and homework for the year.  Homework is due on Tuesdays.  Please only sent the notebook to school on Tuesdays.  Spelling tests will be on Tuesdays.  The first homework assignment due date and spelling test will be on TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2016.

Please remember to sign up for Remind.com.  See the link on our blog.

Tuesday 6 September 2016

Day 1

We spent the day learning classroom routines and school expectations.

This morning students met our librarian, Mrs. Strickland, and they were able to take out 2 books.  We will visit the library every day but students are allowed to keep their books for 2 weeks, if they wish.  Please make sure that your child gets in the habit of keeping their library books in the library bag when the books are not being read.

This morning we read, "First Day Jitters" written by Julie Danneberg.

Ask your child to retell the story.

This afternoon, we discussed how we felt about coming to school when we got up this morning and started working on our graph.

Students ended the day in the gym with Mrs. Pegg.  Mrs. Pegg will be our class science and gym teacher.  Students have gym twice a week.  Please make sure that they have running shoes for gym class.

Make sure that your child knows where to meet you after school.  Again, we ask parents not to come into our hallways.  If you cannot find your child, please go to the office, via the front doors  facing Alfred Paterson Drive.

We did it!  Everyone survived the first day in grade 2😊.
